We're Seeing Green!

We are seeing green around our house - all over - the grass has turned green, the tulips green stems are just waiting to bloom.   Our trees in the front yard are budding - I am looking forward to seeing the green leaves POP out and shade our house.

Our front door, garage side door and internal garage doors were all painted a red color - which is lovely - but there are several houses around town with red doors - so of course I wanted to be different...

Here is the before photos of our doors....

This is our internal garage door and our front door is above.

to the right is our other garage side door - on the inside...

I went online to Pintrest and collected several color ideas:

  • Bright Yellow
  • Grass Green
  • Orange
  • Lime Green
  • Teal/Turqoise

All of which would go great with our dark grey house paint and bright white trim......  now which color to pick....

We decided to go with Lime Green!  Sherwin Williams color swatch named: Frolic

A couple of photos of the 4 coats of paint that was put onto the doors...in the process...

Side Garage Door - taped off

I put on 4 coats of paint onto the doors, 3 with a smooth surface roller and then the final with a small handbrush.

Shawn also helped out with this painted project, and sanded, primed and then painted our planters for the front of our house in the same color.

I cant wait to plant pretty fuschia pink flowers in the planters this summer.

Here is the final pictures of our doors!!!!  I love the lime green with the dark grey!!!

Are you doing any spring updates to your house????

Diaper Bag Frustrations - so much stuff... for one little person!

The Diaper Bag Dilema...  I need all this stuff...  just in case....

How does such a small person require so much stuff?

How many of you have gotten to the resturant and realized... crap... I don't have a bib for the baby...  or perhaps you have one of those children who likes to snack, however you never seem to have the right snack...  pretty soon your carrying a mounting hiking backpack to every outing and you are having to schedule regular appointments with your chiropractor because the weight of the gosh darn this is out of control.

The common question in mind keeps rising ....
"How does one little person require so much stuff?"

So in order to tackle the clutter... and to ensure that my little one had all that she would need and then some... I decided to divide all the "goodies" into different sections.... hence the magic of diaper bag organization...

Materials that I purchased for this project:

4 Pencil Bags - Dollar Tree - $1.00 a piece

And here we go... how I organized my daughter's Diaper Bag....

First Bag O Goodies.... The Entertainment .... aka the toys...
Our daughter loves to have many different options to play with... so thank you to Dollar Tree for many of the items in this bag of fun....

  • Foam Stickers
  • Stickers
  • Scratch Paper & Crayons
  • Four Puzzles
  • Play-Do
  • Eric Carle lace up cards with 4 laces

Second Bag of goodies.... aka the snacks... or as they are called at our house "NACKS"

Again, we need alot of options... in hopes that we always have the right snack for the occasion..
Crackers, Fruit snacks, Fruit Leather, Applesauce on the Go and Gold Fish.  Sometimes I change out the fruit snacks for dried fruit - she loves dried apricots... I can't keep them in the house!

You will also see in the front pocket that we take along alot of hand-wipes.  - $1.00 for a large packet at the Dollar Tree.

Third Bag of fun.... the eatting utensils and bibs.... nothing fancy here... pretty explanitory..

We used bibsters and the silverware is also from The Dollar Tree.  The carrier came with them.  We have 2 sets that we trade out so we can wash the used ones.

And the final bag of goodies.... the actual diapering stuff....

Diapers - 4 of them
Wipes
Changing Pad
1 change of clothes/outfit
1 pair of socks
Diaper Cream
Lotion, and Hand Sanitizer
and a plastic sack for any accidents/messes

Finally, the stuffed - I mean  - organized Diaper Bag...

Hope these ideas inspire you.  Maybe you have ideas on other items that Mommys out there would benefit from...  What all do your kiddos need/want in their diaper bag?

Blocking the Drive By's and Lookey-Lou's...

We have a house with a HUGE bay window in the front of the house, facing the street.... and it provides a direct view right thru our house and thru our kitchen... I am pretty sure if one studied the house slowly as they were driving by they could see our neighbor's 3-season porch behind us.  LOL!

I could never find a curtain that I liked the looks of, I thought about getting bamboo shades or even having a custom roman shade whipped up.... I knew whatever we purchased it would need to be something easy to maintain as it is behind the sink so it recieved alot of wear and tear from the overspray and playing of soapy bubbles....

So of course I hit up my favorite website for creative ideas, Pintrest...  I found several ideas and various ways to do no-sew roman shades or roller shades....Pinned them for future reference

My favorite ideas from Pintrest are listed below...

http://awelldressedhome.com/519-quick-and-easy-diy-window-shade/

 http://365days2simplicity.blogspot.com/2011/04/easy-no-se

http://evolutionofstyleblog.blogspot.com/2011/08/no-sew-all-faux-roman-shade.html

My material list for this pull shade is:

          2 yards fabric - Hobby Lobby - $9.38
Roller Shade - WalMart - $4.97
Spray Adhesive - Lowes - on hand
Roller Mounting Hardware -WalMart - .97

                   Process for Roller Shade:

Mount roller brackets in appropriate location on your window. We used the celing mount option.

Then we moved onto attaching the fabric to the roller shade... we rolled out the shade to the full length, laid the fabric over the top for a dry fit...  then we sprayed the roller shade with spray adhesive and attached the fabric.  We smoothed out the wrinkles as we went.

Next I trimmed the excess fabric along the edges
and on the end of the shade.

Final step.... put the roller shade up in the mounting brackets and pull down for shade from the evening sun, and from a complete look thru as you drive by our house!

Here is the final product in action! Lovely dose of green and blue polka-dots to compliment our kitchen and dining room paint colors.

Hi, Have you met our front door?

Who's decorating their house for spring?
Who's looking for decor that will go the extra mile.... past the easter eggs and bunnies... maybe even past our town's tulips.... So here is what I came up with and the step by step instructions on the project.

There are so many cute ideas on Pintrest that I have seen that I adore.... but how to incorporate these ideas... without having 87 wreaths, and 8 plastic totes full of different floral choices... all of which I wish we had the storage for... but alas... we do not... what's a girl to do?

Got myself a few photos/ideas from Pintrest that I really liked.  I have provided the link to the blogs and the photos below...

Chevron Print - really trendy print right now - so I made a template out of cardboard just like on this website:www.pennypincherfashion.com

Pinned ImagePinned Image I loved these colors - yellow and teal -  and the cute simple message of this wreath.... from www.agirlandagluegun.com

So.... I gathered my materials....

Cardboard Template
Poster board - Walmart -- .97
Yellow Paint - Bright Yellow - Walmart - $1.97
Teal Paint - Bimini Blue - Walmart - .57
Yellow Polka Dot Ribbon - Dollar Tree - $1.00
Picture Frame - Mahaska Co. Outreach - $2.00

See my picture/print out of my collaboration of ideas.. Always nice to see your inspiriation in front of you.....

Next Step, I took the picture frame apart - the mat and picture was all moldy and gross, so no love lost in getting rid of that.  All I have left is the frame....
I painted the frame the teal....

Then I traced the chevron template onto the poster board, and painted the stripes in with the Bright Yellow paint.

I cut the painted poster board to fit the frame...
Cut out the wording "Hi" on my Cricut - I layered it up with grey houndstooth and black paper...
Glued the wording to the board, and inserted into the frame.

Added the yellow polka dotted ribbon - stapled to the backside of the frame.

Tied a ribbon and hung on the door! - Hi! Have you met our front door?

Welcome to our home!

Entrance.... Stage Left... Watch out for changing props...

When you walk into a home, you want to have an area to come into ... a foyer... a loitering area... one that houses someplace to hang up your coats, somewhere to put your shoes, and gives you a glimpse into the home that you are entering.

Well I don't have some grand foyer with a crystal massive chandelier, nor do I really have much of a loitering.... in fact when we bought the house, there really wasnt much of an entrance at all.... nothing very welcoming about it... the flow was WEIRD and choppy.... and did I mention WEIRD?  I struggled with this for quite some time, how do I make this area work for us?
So.... we created an entry area!
I have seen all kinds of great ideas on Pintrest, and there are some really talented people who make benches, cubbies, and multiple areas that really jazz up their entry areas while also making it practical.
But how did we make it our own entry way?  One that incorporated my style (electic and oddities) and my husbands style (long lasting and affordable) that was also practical?
Well I had this door from my parents old garage on the farm...  this door used to be on a rolling rack, held from the top (like the old farm doors you see coming back into style now).
This door was just basically a door that was in our living room in our previous house in the corner as a decoration.  - I began to see that it actually had another purpose...
I wanted this door to create a partition in the small walk way to the dining room, so it would create a nook of sorts.

So here is the poor wooden door that weighs a tremendous amount...  laid down for sanding... layers of wonderous lead paint..

The door wasnt the entire size of the opening, so Shawn had a great idea to install this door to make it look like it was floating in air -  either suspended in air while still allowing the concept to be open and airy...
Here he is installing the screws into our flooring and joices for support.  He covered the HUGE screws with a pipe that was spray painted black....

Here is a view from our dining room looking at the front door...

Door has now been sanded, and suspended by screws...
Here is a couple more views of the door before it was painted.
Views from the dining room/kitchen

View from our front door

We painted the door a milky white color called "White Chocolate Mousse" I didnt want it to completely match our white trim.
We spray painted the door handle to match the piping that covers the screws.

Look at Shawn, he's so cute, getting in there and making sure that everything is JUST RIGHT!  He always does such a great job at these projects I come up with.

So for the past year or so this has been our entry area.... and it has been great....

Lamp Base - Target $20.00
Lamp Shade - Walmart - $13.00
Woven Basket - Target - Price - dont remember I have had for awhile now...
Various photos of us... from all over

Stay tuned... just because this looks ok... doesnt mean I will keep it that way!  LOL

The Dining Room - not just a formality

According to Wikipedia the dining room is a room for consuming food.  In modern times it is adjacent to the kitchen for convenience in serving.  In the medival times, it was on a different level than the kitchen completely...  oh and they had a wait staff.... other than the momma/wife.

Most tables tend to have a rectangular shape and a number of chairs, some formal settings have 2 chairs for the head and end of the table with two arms and then armless chairs for the sides of the table for those joining the head of the family and his wife or mother.

I always have enjoyed the look of formal dining rooms, and the idea of having enough seating for my family to all sit around and share a family meal.  I feel that a dining room conveys the thought, the idea of making memories and family traditions.

Here is the dining room of our house at the beginning when we moved in (minus the fridge - http://smothersx3.blogspot.com/2013/01/escapades-of-remodeling-part-1.html ) , it was originally called the piano room, it was completely blocked off from the rest of the house, did not have overhead lighting, only electricity was the 4 plug ins.  The wall between the dining room and the kitchen was knocked out and opened up.

Here is a view of the dining room/piano room from our front entry way... this was a small pass thru "hallway" that was quite narrow... and I didnt feel like it had a purpose... therefore = another project in the wings ( a story for another time)

My husband installed a floating door from my parents farm.. this door hung on the garage and hung from an industrial railing and slid open in the middle... all together there were 4 doors, and they are VERY heavy.

Here is a view of the door inside the dining room, paint sanded off, ready to be painted.

Door is painted and installed.

We wanted to spruce up the dining room to go along with our newly spruced up kitchen... but didnt want to spend alot of $$$$$$$$$....  so...  here is the money and the steps in our "remodel" for this room...

Painted the room a beautiful french blue color, installed white beadboard and railing.  We ripped out the carpet in the room and installed bamboo flooring.   Total spent on this room $800.00.

We purchased our overhead light at Lowe's on clearance for $200.00 - it's a Pottery Barn knock off. I love the look of all the "candles" and the fact that we have lighting in there!

The art work in the room consists of black and white photos from Seattle, WA.  My brother used to live out there and loved it.  I would highly recommend it as a vacation experience, I loved it.  That city has a great energy about it, one with the beautiful views of the mountains and hiking, and access to the ocean. The photos in this collage I feel capture the essence of Seattle.  The big photo in the middle is from a carnival ride and states "MUSIC", there is a small photo of the Public Market sign, and then another couple signs from the inside of the market "Fresh Fish" and an antique arrow.  There are two other photos that I feel are beautiful for your mind...someone had wrote in wet cement "Dont Lose Your Soul" and then in the public restrooms in the basement some graffiti artist sprayed "Question Everything" - beautiful statements.  The overall photos just came all together to represent the artistic vibe and the creative spirit that Seattle really encourages.  The best thing about it, I love the oxymoron of having a "formal dining room" with the informality and artisitic-ness in these rebelous statements and photos.

On the wall on the right, a statement from Marilyn Monroe "Imperfection is beauty.  Madness is Genius.  And it's better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.

There is a bay window in our dining room, one that I am not too fond of, but I am told by Shawn that it's staying.. so I hide it with pillows of different textures - in browns, golds, and blues.

Curtains are flat sheets from Walmart that I bought on clearance for $7.00 a set.  I bought two sets...  They came contrasting pillow cases, so I made a small bench pad out of the two pillow cases... this isnt ideal... I think it needs more padding for the look to be better... but this will do for the time being.

Our table decor - two citron yellow urns from my girlfriends shop in Oskaloosa  - The Painted Daisy.  If your in town sometime, stop in and check her out, shes on the square and has really great quality products!

The table runner is from Mahaska Drug as are the two small owl votive candle holders.

The hutch in the corner came from a local thrift shop for $25.00, it had a broken glass pane in one of the upper doors, I had it replaced by Oskaloosa Glass for $3.00.  I painted the inside of the hutch a pale contrasting/complimentary blue.  Our dishes and glass ware really shines and shows nicely with the coloring behind it.  I love the old antique Westinghouse fan.

The sign above the bay window is an old wooden sign that my brother and I found in a pile of boards on my parents farm.  I salvaged it away for many years (Yes, I was a collector of oddities even when I was young).  We washed it up and attached it to the wall.

Here is a viewing of our flooring - dark bamboo.  Rug is from Target, we had this rug in our first home.  Our dining room is a step down from the kitchen, you can see the contrast between our cork flooring in the kitchen and our dark flooring in the dining room.  While I love the dark flooring, it does show the dust alot easier.... something to think about if you are getting ready to remodel.

The plant in the corner is from my daddy's funeral.  His aunt June gave that plant to me... and I have worked very hard at keeping that plant alive.  I found the planter at Gordmans for $20.00 and filled the bottom up with spray foam and rocks for drainage and easier mobility if needed.  It gets great sunlight from the afternoon sun.

As for my vision for a room to hold our family dinner's in, I think I have incorporated many aspects of our family in this room...  the dining set was purchased with the $ that was given to Shawn and I at our wedding, it has enough seating for our guests, my mother's favorite color - blue, the photo collage from Seattle where my brother was stationed for many years, the fact that most families are ridiculous and beautiful, the plant from my fathers funeral, eclectic items from my family farm where I spent many years at, a beautiful antique grandfathers clock which was given to us by Shawn's grandparents (his grandpa restores old clocks), dishes from my memaw... I really feel that our family is represented in this room - not in person but items that capture them.  And isnt that what a dining room really is... a room for your family to gather in and enjoy time together, sharing food and stories?

Not the formality, its about the gathering together around the table....
